Preparation Guides

Here is some preparation guides for use of Re-Paint. You can use Re-Paint on metal, wood and fibre glass. Below is guides to using Re-Paint on each substrate. We are only telling you how it can be done, not how to do it. As always our advice is only to be taken as a guide.

If you have rust, remove or cure it first. Use ProRust Professional Rust Treatments - Removes rust, or if seriously corroded, ProRust will turn the rust to a black iron phosphate, ready for Re-Paint primers.

Safety

Before moving onto the guides, make sure you have a well ventilated working area. There is no trip hazards, people working around you are aware you are painting and that you have the personal protective clothing and equipment. At the least we recommend you have overalls that fit properly, gloves, breathing mask and goggle's. Suitable footwear also needs to be used. You can and should get advice on PPE from the Health & Safety website.

You will also need to read the MSDS and TDS sheets. These are sheets relating to application and safety issues while using Re-Paint before continuing onto the preparation guides below.

Re-Paint on Metal: 1 - Prepare the metal by removing any rust with a wire brush/sanding. We recommend using ProRust Professional Rust Treatment (liquid or Non drip gel) for removing any rust.

2 - Fill any imperfections, Re-Paint Primer will assist in filling minor imperfections. Once filling is done, clean the whole area down and degrease with Re-Paint degreaser on a clean rag or cloth.

3 - Apply a coat of Re-Paint Primer to the metal. Once dry apply a second coat of primer. You can sand in between coats, the more you do sand between coats the better the final finish. It is not required. The second coat can go straight on.

4 - If you are going to apply a 3rd coat of primer now is the time. Once you are happy the whole area is fully primed with 2 coats or more, give the whole area a gentle sand down to key the primer, ready for the next stage. Again, its not essential that you do this sanding, but it is recommended for a better finish.

5 - Apply the Re-Paint Enamel Topcoat. You can use 320 grade wet and dry sand paper for sanding between coats for the ultimate finish. Again, this is not required, but as usual recommended!

6 - In most cases 2 to 3 coats of Re-Paint Enamel Topcoat will be enough. However some customers put 4 to 5+ coats on. It is dependant on the protection needed, what the item, vehicle, etc is used for and with what you feel is correct.

Re-Paint on Fibreglass: 1 - Prepare the fibreglass by sanding with 120 grade. You do not have to use a primer on fibreglass, although it can be recommended if you are covering a dark colour with light colour, or vice versa. Or if there is many imperfections in the surface - a primer will help to fill these imperfections. Primer is also easier to sand.

2 - Degrease the whole area with Re-Paint degreaser using a clean rag or cloth.

3 - Once the area is sanded/primed and prepared with degreaser you can apply Re-Paint Enamel Topcoat. This high gloss finish will do a great job of covering any imperfections, but really you want all them dealt with before applying this coat. After this first coat, you can apply another after approx 1 hour.

4 - Apply a 2nd coat. Re-Paint has an excellent coverage. You may find you want to do a 3rd coat, but 2 coats is usually enough. if a 3rd coat is to be applied, you can wait 24 hours,or longer if possible - Depends on temperature for drying times.

5 - If 3rd coat is being applied, sand with a very fine grade, wet and dry 320 is fine. Then clean off with a wipe down of degreaser, allow to dry and apply the 3rd coat. Repeat this step for further coats. 2 to 3 coats is usually more than sufficient.

Re-Paint on Wood: 1 - Prepare the wood by filling all perfections. This method is used on all wood, including ply, softwood and hardwoods. It includes the same method as used on double diagonal hulls as found on classic yachts and so on.

2 - Once all filling is done, sand the wood with a 120 Grade sandpaper. If the wood is in very bad condition, you can save time using 80 Grade then moving onto 120 Grade. Just make sure you finish with 120 Grade.

3 - Degrease the area and once dry apply Re-Paint Primer.

4 - Apply a further coat of primer. You can then gently sand this 2nd coat down with 120 Grade sandpaper and then apply a 3rd coat of primer- Or move onto step 5.

5 - Apply 2 to 3 coats of Re-Paint Enamel Topcoat. If you are painting a wooden yacht hull, double diagonal, caravel, classic, etc - we would say that 5/6 coats is more preferable. 4 coats is well enough, but for the added protection, the extra coats on a boat hull are worth it. You can sand with a 320 grade wet and dry sandpaper in between coats, or every 2nd coat if you are applying 4 - 6 coats.

Re-Paint using spray gun: 1 - Clean all equipment and use Re-Paint degreaser to clean the whole area to be sprayed.

2 - Add Re-Paint and thinners at a ratio of 10% to 15% = 100ml to 150ml of thinners per litre of Re-Paint. You can add more or less as you feel is comfortable to work with.

3 - Spray several light coats instead of a few heavy coats. You will know what you need it to be finished like, heavy coats are quicker, but may not look as well and could cause paint runs.

4 - After spraying, clean all equipment with Re-Paint Thinners.
